For a great Bundu treasure hunt look no further than the Nissan X -Trail. The X definitely marks the Trail. One of the most robust-feeling vehicles when it comes to off-roading. It also has a strong CVT Petrol engine which adds lots of solidity and strength on dirt and gravel roads more like a proper 4WD than most soft-roaders. You can expect incredible off-road aids like downhill speed assist, decent approach and departure angles, and a 209mm ground clearance, and the All Mode 4×4-i system which combines sensors and vehicle-angle monitoring to automatically determine whether the propshaft needs to be engaged and send up to 50 per cent to the rear axle. The 4×4-i dial on the centre console can also be rotated to a LOCK position to fix the torque split at 50:50 up to 40km/h, and can be turned in the opposite direction for 2WD for fuel-saving front-wheel drive. In terms of space, the X-Trail has a double cargo floor in the rear. The lower section includes a pull-out drawer that’s perfect for storing wet swim gear and the like. If you remove the lift-up upper floor; the boot’s capacity increases from 410 to 603 litres. The maximum cargo space enlarges to 1649 litres. Unfortunately the ornate roof rails with integrated lights make the X-Trail appear macho yet you don’t get standard cross-over bars for up-top loads,  however the intergrated lights make for a great wild-life adventure spectacle or perhaps in foggy nightskies out on a road trip up Van Reenen’s pass! Another outstanding feature is the rear view camera integrated behind the rear view mirror. As soon as you put the gear on reverse mode, the little screen magically fades upfront with immaculate clarity of your rear view. Hugely practical with clever dual-floor cargo area that’s also large and completely flat when rear seats folded; plentiful storage; one of the better ‘soft roaders’ off the tar road. The rugged styling isn’t out of style as yet, though, because the X-Trail is one of the most robust-feeling vehicles in its medium-SUV segment when it comes to off-roading. It’s showing its age, however, in terms of cabin design and CVT petrol engine refinement, but has comfort yet also better on-road manners.
